Why is Windows Server 2008 SP2 directly being released without a formal announcement of SP1? Well, that's because Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 are the first versions of Windows to have the same code base.
Simply type “winver” in the “Run..”. You will get a dialog box indicating the Windows Server 2008 RTM is actually Windows Server 2008. So the next Service Pack for Windows Server is SP2. Hotfixes and other updates will be the same for both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.
