Microsoft Phone Data Manger is an application which backs up your data in your PC. In an event of data corruption or loss this can be used to synchronize data with your phone. The phone needs to support some ubiquitous standards to work . For contacts synchronization, your phone should support the SyncML standard (in phones where SyncML is not supported, AT commands are used), and for file download it needs to support OBEX. Your phone should have Bluetooth or USB connectivity. IR or wifi connectivity is not supported. So mostly all the latest phones will work. Microsoft has released a non exhaustive list of models which will work and which will not.

Since it gives options only for syncing, we cannot use it as a file browser and view all the contents of the phone. The initial sync may take a very long and it may take even more time if transfer is through Bluetooth. Also, you can only backup your contacts to Windows Live Contacts only and not to your hard disk directly. iPhone support is also not mentioned. As such, it is a decent freeware application with an intuitive user interface. Microsoft should have bundled this with its Windows Live "Wave" application suite.
Here is the download link for it.
